Best Find: Snacks by the lb.

What it offers: Lots of candy stores have nut-caramel turtles and butter creams, but if you're looking for that candy necklace that made your neck sticky when you were 7, Snacks by the lb. is for you.

The Feasterville store offers new-school and old-school candy. There are the gourmet chocolate-covered pretzels with toppings such as Oreo-cookie crumbles, but there are also Mallo Cups, Necco Wafers, and the wax bottles with the juice inside.

The candy shop stocks sweets that cost between 10 cents and $24, the price tag for a pound of chocolate truffles. There is creamy homemade fudge made by co-owner Tracey Laiken that is decadently rich, and a wide variety of nuts, plain and roasted.

There's more: Snacks by the lb.'s inventory goes beyond the sweet. There are greeting cards, gifts, candles, balloons, and jewelry made by Laiken, who studied glassblowing in Italy.

Relearning how to look at art, with Amelia Arenas

After arriving at the museum, you pay your admission and join the line of people shuffling from one work to another. In front of each exhibit you stoop to read the accompanying wall text, and then have a brief glance at the work itself before moving on. Reaching the end of the show, you suppress a guilty feeling of relief, browse the knickknacks in the gift shop, and then enjoy a gourmet coffee in the stylish cafe. And by the time you leave, barely a word of what you read about the works remains in mind, and the pictures themselves are slipping from the memory.

Hands up anyone who hasn't been guilty of this, at least sometimes.

But if the last exhibition you visited didn't engage your mental faculties, console yourself with the thought that it might not be your fault.

Racism a backdrop in 2 SC cases alleging teacher-student affairs

The arrest of two female teachers on charges of having sex with their male students has brought cries of lingering racism in one of South Carolina's most conservative counties and evoked some of the South's oldest and deepest-seated racial taboos.

Both women are white. The boys -- six in all -- are black.

Some of the blacks who make up more than a quarter of Laurens County's 70,000 residents are upset over the handling of the two cases, particularly the release of the teachers on bail.

They say the cases reflect the way crimes by whites against blacks in the segregated South were treated less seriously than other offenses, and blacks who leveled accusations against whites were less likely to be believed.

"If this had been black teachers, they would not be out of jail right now," said Corinnie Young, a 49-year-old bookstore employee who is black.

New in outdoors equipment

A new product called the "Game Gourmet" is meant to ensure that no meal of wild flesh ever tastes "gamey." Created by award-winning chef John Schumacher, the Game Gourmet consists of four different bake-in-the-bag products that include a recipe, spices, and an oven cooking bag. You simply add the wild game meat, vegetables and water to the bag and cook it in your oven for three hours. The meat, Schumacher promises, will be moist and tender and without any "gamey" taste when done. There are four products to choose from: upland game, ducks and geese, soups and stews, and roasts and steaks. Each packet offers a basic recipe, plus three additional recipes for variety, and sells for $6.99. For information: visit www.gamegourmet.com or call 1-866-403-2477.

Cupcaking: What, where, and how much

Cupcakes aren't just for elementary-schoolers anymore. Bakeries specializing in gourmet cupcakes are springing up in cities all over the country. Though the trend probably started with New York City's Magnolia Bakery (of Sex and the City fame), cupcake mania has officially landed in Pittsburgh. Our cupcake guide can point you to the most delicious cupcakes in the city.

Dozen Cupcakes, Pittsburgh, Murray Avenue, Squirrel Hill

Kelly: When I first stumbled upon Dozen, I could not have been more overjoyed. Despite the cupcakery's tiny storefront, its bright blue interior caught my eye, and I'd go so far as to say that it has changed my life. Inside, I discovered what may be the single greatest cupcake innovation of all time: the Elvis. With banana cake, chocolate hazelnut buttercream filling, and peanut butter icing to top it off, the Elvis is like the dessert combo I've always been searching for.
