| New cookbooks promising speedy meals
When it comes to getting dinner on the table, speed isn't enough. Americans have come to demand gourmet style and flavors from cookbooks that promise fast and easy meals. How does the latest crop hold up?
"Hands-off Cooking," by Ann Martin Rolke (Wiley, 2007, $17.95)
The gist here is that the best fast meals are those that need not be tended to. And so while Rolke's recipes aren't fast by the Rachael Ray 30-minute-standard (the caramelized-onion brisket takes almost seven hours), they are designed to require little hands-on time.
Which is why rather than total start-to-finish times, Rolke offers what she calls hands-off time with each recipe. This does leave prep time a mystery, but she believes it's better to know how long you won't spend at the stove while the recipe cooks.

In just a matter of weeks, the final traces of the Lasalle Your Independent Grocer will come down and a grocery store that has stood for about a decade will be no more.
In its place will be a new grocery store concept: the Real Canadian Superstore.
"I have been in the field for 20 years," said incoming manager Mike Porter. "I was born and raised in Sudbury and I jumped at the chance to come back to my hometown and open the first Real Canadian Superstore in the North.
"We will be bringing it to the city. And we are going to be lowering our prices. I think the consumer will be thrilled about what we are going to offer here. It will be very unique."
The Lasalle Your Independent Grocer store was 55,000 square feet; the new store will be about 125,000 square feet with 75,000 square feet devoted to traditional groceries and 50,000 to everything else.

Le Cook Store offers culinary tools, demonstration
Are you a culinary genius but lack the appropriate kitchen appliances to prepare the banquet of which you've always dreamed?
Le Cook Store, located at 911 Third Ave., across from Pullman Square, has all the tools and cookware any amateur gourmet chef could ever want.
Apart from its wide selection of gastronomic gadgets, Le Cook Store also offers cooking demonstrations in its built-in kitchen.
The store is in its fourth month of operation, and Shawn Bresnahan, manager and operating partner of the store, said they have had good business.
"We've done very well," Bresnahan said. "We've actually had a lot of people through the doors."
The store is located next to the Marshall Community and Technical College Culinary & Cooking Institute, and although the two establishments occasionally work together for mutual gain, they are not a single entity.
