Tourney benefits child advocacy and adult rape crisis center
CAPE GIRARDEAU Organizers for the 3rd Annual Childrens Charity Golf Tournament are urging area residents to be a voice for children by becoming involved as a player, hole sponsor or by just making a general donation. The tournament, which is scheduled on May 7 this year, will take place at Dalhousie, the No. 1 rated golf course in the state. Tee off times are at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tournament proceeds will benefit the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence, a child advocacy center and adult rape crisis center. The agency provides forensic medical care, counseling and advocacy for victims of physical and sexual abuse. The collection of forensic evidence (documentation of injuries and interviews of victims) is critical in helping law enforcement and prosecutors get child abuse perpetrators off the streets.
Pet food: Gourmet vs. good enough
Grammy's Pot Pie needed a little more salt. So did the chicken thighs with peas, carrots and potatoes made by Fromm. The pumpkin crumble dessert from Nutro smelled good and had plenty of ground cinnamon but having less than 100 calories per serving helped make up for its bland taste. These recipes may sound good to you, but the food typically doesn't find its way to a dinner table. This fare - complete with slogans like "It's not dinner without dessert" - is for dogs and cats. Recent pet-food recalls are driving pet owners to consider gourmet options. At the very least, experts say, pet owners are becoming more educated about what they're serving their animals. Those choices can be beneficial for a dog or cat, but they're likely to be more expensive and in some cases may not be worth the money.
Love-in for Contessa
Thinly disguised as part of her entourage, I walk at a suitable distance behind Ina Garten, known to her legion of fans as the Barefoot Contessa, as she makes her way to the stage for a recent book-signing at Indigo in the Manulife Centre. Talk about a love-in! I later learn this is the largest such event ever held at this store for a celebrity cook. "I'd say there are about 800 people in the line-up," guesses a security guard planted firmly at the backstage door as he eyes the lively throng. This is Garten's first visit to Canada. That fact, along with the across-the-board appeal of her 4-year-old Food Network show, beautifully filmed in the sunny kitchen of her rural home, may explain what one manager calls "pent-up demand." Smiling, Garten moves purposefully along a path cleared for her through the huge room.
A Little Blues at Maas Coffee Roasters in North Florida
Fort Walton Beach, April 18, 2007 -- Jim Mass' passion for beans began 20 years ago when he learned the coffee roasting business inside and out. And now, he has his own business which includes the Maas Cafe, as well as an offsite roaster. He also plans to sell his fresh-roasted, gourmet coffee (made from beans from all over the world) on the Internet soon. For a list of all of the varieties that Jim has been very carefully roasting to perfection, visit his website. And now, as the weather is warming...every Friday night at 7:00 p.m., the infamous Joe Fingers will be banging out some hot blues on the back patio of the Maas Cafe - which overlooks the Sound in downtown Fort Walton Beach. (Okaloosa Island is just over Brooks Bridge, not far from Jim's new place.) So, grab some java (there are many options), and a chair.
Coffeehouse has grand Easter opening in Bethany
A fan of gourmet food has revitalized the former Bethany post office with the scent of smoked meat and fair-trade coffees.Andrea Ross already had her eye on the Bethany landmark two weeks before it went up for sale last year. When the 'for sale' went up, she jumped to buy it. Since then, she has replaced the floors, repainted and installed ovens and a marble/stainless steel prep table.Walking in, customers see an array of coffees amidst the wreaths, flowers and swags. Three to one, they order the house blend of bavarian chocolate coffee with hints of hazelnut and cinnamon."I appreciate good coffee, especially if it will help benefit other farmers and other families in other parts of the world," she says. While Ms Ross is passionate about fair-trade coffees, she also offers a selection of meats that she smokes in-house -- back ribs, chicken, seafood and Jamaican jerk wings.
VB Boulevard Vino
I enjoy spending the odd afternoon visiting various wine shopspoking around among the offerings, looking for a bargain or something new. If you enjoy the pleasures of the bottle hunt like I do, then I recommend a visit to Grape & Gourmet (Loehmanns Plaza, 4000 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Suite 180, VB, 486-9463, www.grapeandgourmet.com) to enjoy some cellar time. Proprietors Kevin and Deborah Aylesworth left successful careers behind in Satellite Telecommunications to try their hand at something new. Their something new is really something special. A "clean, well-lighted place." No, not a Hemingwayesque bar, but an elegant and upscale wine shop, well-stocked with bottles from both the big-name vineyards, and smaller lesser-known boutique wineries. Like the wine you had at your favorite restaurant last Saturday night? Then Grape & Gourmet probably has it in stock.
