Take it easy on the butter, Herbs

There is no underestimating the serviceable restaurant. Foodies may flock like lemmings to the latest fab gourmet palace, but is that the place you're going to turn to when it's Friday after work, you're exhausted, there's no food in the fridge, and you need somebody to ask whether you'd like white or red? .

Safety warning, recall issued for Easter eggs, baskets

Parents purchasing or preparing Easter baskets for their young children should beware of a couple of products, consumer watchdogs warned this week.

Consumers Union has issued a warning about Kinder Surprise Eggs, hollow chocolate eggs that contain small toys. The products, made in Italy by the Ferrero Group, have been banned in this country since 1997 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission but sometimes still make it to store shelves.

The chocolate eggs are sometimes available from gourmet food stores, candy merchants and ethnic importers, according to Consumers Union. Until recently, the eggs were being sold on Amazon.com by a Greek importer through the Web site's Marketplace feature.

The commission also has announced a voluntary recall of about 8,500 Disney plush Easter baskets sold at Wal-Mart stores between February and the end of March because they have beads and ribbons that could pose a choking hazard for young children.

Parent: Charged daycare worker 'a little weird'

"I always found him a little bit childish, weird and for the longest time I didn't say anything to him," said a father of three, who attended Ontario Court of Justice at College Park yesterday.

Paul Thomas, 19, was a fixture at the downtown Blevins Child Care Centre with 50-plus children under the age of 7 in his care.

"My first impression of him wasn't good. Everyone else there was friendly to me, but he wasn't," the man said. "He was hugging my son, so I thought I should talk to him. Naturally, as a parent, I'm concerned and I want details."

"I just thought he was a little weird," added a woman, who has since removed her children from the daycare. "He spoke like a child. He sounded like a 5-year-old." .

Caribbean's spice island still a feast for the senses

ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada–Trevor and Jennifer Ward travelled to Grenada in search of exotic spices. The Vancouver couple had read about the thick stands of nutmeg trees that scent the tropical air and were eager to bring back cocoa, cloves and vanilla, which also flourish on the island.

"My mum used a lot of nutmeg, and I use it myself in savoury dishes, such as macaroni and cheese, so the smell always reminds me of home," said Jennifer.

But when the Wards, who are former Toronto residents, stepped ashore in St. George's in January, they discovered the mountainous, jungle-canopied island is still struggling to rebuild, replant and reclaim its title as the Caribbean's Isle of Spice after being hit by two major hurricanes.

In 2004, Hurricane Ivan flattened homes, schools and churches, and destroyed 90 per cent of Grenada's nutmeg trees, which provided one-third of the world's nutmeg supply.

Mardi Gras in May, partying for a good cause

Port Hope merchants love a good party. They sure do. But more importantly they love to party for a good cause.

On Tuesday, May 1 the community is invited to join them at a special fundraiser fiesta - Mardi Gras in May - at the town's newest hotspot, The Great Farini.

Individuals who purchase a $35 ticket to Mardi Gras in May in support of Northumberland Services for women will not only have their name entered into a draw for a $1,000 gift basket, but they'll be holding the key to what organizers are calling the preeminent party of the year. .

Fresh or Frozen, Italian Foods to Top $13.8 Billion in 2011!

(PRLEAP.COM) New York, April 3, 2007 Americas increasing consumption of mass quantities of pizza and pasta is expected to take the retail market for Italian Foods from nearly $12 billion in 2006 to more than $13.8 billion in 2011, according to Italian Foods in the U.S., a new report from market research firm Packaged Facts. Recent market growth has been driven by the pizza and pizza products category which brings in more than 45% of total Italian food sales at retail. Sales in this category topped $5.3 billion in 2006, a jump of 2% over 2005 figures. Pasta sauce and pasta each make up slightly more than 21% of the market. The smallest category, Italian cheeses, experienced significant gains over the last two years due in part to increased demand for natural and gourmet varieties. Capitalizing on the current health and wellness trend, Italian food marketers have been consciously positioning the health and nutritional benefits of their products.

Visit from celebrity chef is the Cat's meow

SPRING VALLEY -- For celebrity chef Cat Cora, walking into a Spring Valley home that she'd never before visited on Tuesday afternoon and whipping up a gourmet meal for 12 was a piece of cake. Actually, make that baklava. Pistachio baklava.

"I do Iron Chef. This is fun. This is down time," joked the diminutive chef who turns into a powerhouse when she appears on Food Network's Iron Chef America, a cooking competition that pits celebrity chefs against guest chefs. Cora, with 11 wins and only three losses is tied for the best record with Mario Batali.

Her appearance in Spring Valley was the prize awarded to John Handforth for winning the InSinkErator Dirty Dish Dash online sweepstakes. Handforth, who is retired after 38 years with a telephone company, played the contest every day from the time he learned about it in late January until the game ended in February.
