Monday's Small-Cap Winners & Losers

Small-cap stocks moved tightly with the broader market Monday for most of the day before coming up slightly higher than the rest, though still ending up in negative territory.

Among the winners was Metabolix (MBLX - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr), which develops eco-friendly products, after it formed a joint venture with agricultural processor ADM (ADM - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) in order to make biodegradable plastics. The first plant for these purposes should launch in 2008. Cambridge, Mass.-based Metabolix surged 15% to $20.70; ADM closed 1.1% higher at $38.96.

Metals-components maker Kreisler Manufacturing (KRSL - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) shot up 18.4% to $24.28 after announcing a three-year deal with United Technologies (UTX - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) for F119 engine components.

New winds blow on Netanya

It is not clear when Netanya's image changed from a vacation city with a beach, a promenade, and hotels to a city beset by violence, crime and terror. But now an old- new wind blows on this beautiful stretch of beach, which extends under the ridge of sand cliffs.

The 77 year old tourist city is awakening to a new life and is offering visitors a varied and colorful vacation: well-kept promenades, a new park, inexpensive hotel rooms, historical attractions, ethnic restaurants, a colorful market, and little boutiques.

The thousands of new immigrants from France have added their own rhythm. Between the Russian gefilte fish, French bistros, Tunisian hamins, and Irish beer on the beach, the city is teeming with life even in the winter.

New bilingual magazine seeks to build bridges

College Hill, a new Chinese-American bilingual campus magazine run by the Brown China Forum, will come out with its first print issue by May, said Weiye Li MA'04 GS, the magazine's associate editor. The magazine's online version, which will be similar but not identical to the print version, will be available next week, said Editor in Chief Nathan Mao GS.

The magazine aims to enhance communication between Chinese and American students as well as increase the diversity of voices on campus, said Mao, who is also president of BCF.

Members of BCF first conceived of the magazine last fall as a way to "establish a bridge between overseas Chinese students and domestic Chinese students," Li said.

College Hill, which has both undergraduate and graduate students as editors and contributors, features a variety of elements, including academic work, poetry, art, opinions, job information and a gourmet section, Mao said.

See's savoring its sweet success

Chances are, plenty of Easter baskets are still hanging around homes with the last chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies and other sweets from See's Candies, a tradition in California households for 86 years.

But the South San Francisco chocolatier wants its treats to be known coast to coast, so See's continues its expansion. Distinguished by its 205 candy shops with black and white tile floors, workers in prim white uniforms and glass display cases neatly stocked with 100 varieties of the company's treats, See's expects to open more locations in states outside its California stronghold by year's end.

New stores going up in Nevada, Washington state, Hawaii and Utah will join a legion of permanent kiosks operating in 21 airports -- mainly in Western states, although one opened this month in Boston's Logan International.

Book Review: Educating Peter

The last part of the book deals with sending Peter out into the world of wine to deal with a wine auction, purchasing wine in a retail environment, talking with a restaurant sommelier, choosing wine with dinner and dining with a famous wine collector.

Peter more than holds his own in these situations, learning and understanding fully that no matter how much one can be told about the world of wine, regardless of how many wines you can sample and compare, there is no substitute for ongoing research, and there is no way of ever knowing all there is to understand. Lettie's love of wine shows glowingly in this book and any reader, from an aficionado to a new oenophile such as myself can gain an immense amount of understanding, along with a arm's length list of wonderful wines to try.
