Worried pet owners start cooking for their animals

That's been the reaction of many owners to the recalls recently of 95 pet-food brands manufactured by Canada-based Menu Foods.

Initially, the Food and Drug Administration reported that at least 14 cats and dogs had died of kidney failure from ingesting the food, which New York State officials say was tainted with Aminopterin, a chemotherapy drug no longer used in the U.S. It is used as a rodenticide in China, the source of wheat gluten the company put in its foods. Some veterinarians expect that many more pets have been sickened by the contaminated food and will eventually die from it.

Sixty million cans and packages of moist food have been yanked off store shelves - roughly 1 percent of the nation's pet-food inventory. Even if their animals haven't ingested any of the tainted food, the owners are panicking anew at this question: What will I feed my animal now?

Christie Shaver of New York's Healthy Pet Gourmet (www.thpg.com), which makes custom fresh-food meals for dogs, has been deluged with calls from people who now are ready to fire up their stoves for Fido.

Charlie Trotter style

As if taunting us with one restaurant we can't afford isn't enough, now uber-chef Charlie Trotter is touting his restaurant at the One&Only Palmilla resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, in a new cookbook. The recipes showcase his light, crisp and fresh approach to traditional spa cuisine. But, sorry, Charlie: Though we'd love to join you for a culinary spring break, we're pinching our pennies these days. We can, however, pony up enough cash to give our taste buds a little R&R with spa cuisine on the cheap.

Naturally, our first stop is Trotter's To Go , a haven of fancy foodstuffs. Yeah, it's pricier than your average grocery store, but just perusing the shelves is enough to make you feel a little pampered. While there, you could pick up your copy of "Spa Cuisine" ($39.95) and get cracking on the Trotter recipes for grilled beef tenderloin with tomato-and-leek strewn quinoa and roasted garlic sauce.

Dragons' Phipps stings Bees

"Gonzo's got good stuff," Dayton manager Donnie Scott said. "He has been blessed with a great arm. I saw him in the GCL (Gulf Coast League) tear it up. It's there. And the better physical shape he's in, the better pitches will come."

Restaurant review: Sit a spell over breakfast at Mary's Kitchen

If you have ever spent time in Venice Beach, Calif., Mary's Gourmet Kitchen will be familiar. And though there are fewer surfers here than there are in Venice, there is a certain California feeling to this gem in Jensen Beach where you half expect the Beach Boys (or a surfer girl) to join your table.

Breakfast is popular and sometimes you have to wait for a table. Once seated, our two coffees ($1.50 each), orange juice ($1.95) and water arrived quickly. That we needed some time to make our decisions didn't ruffle the staff. Diners can relax at Mary's.
