(04-15) 04:00 PDT Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo -- While waiting at the counter to buy a cup of Splash Cafe's sinfully rich clam chowder, I heard a local resident mutter to her companion, "Get this stuff now, before all the Bakersfield people start showing up." For decades, Central Valley residents have swarmed to Central California's beach cities in an attempt to escape the suffocating heat of summer. Bakersfield folks tend to go south of San Luis Obispo, to Pismo Beach and Avila Beach; people in the city where I grew up, the also-stifling Visalia, chose Cayucos, north of San Luis Obispo. I was always envious that Bakersfield claimed Pismo; not only did it have one of the coolest city names ever, it's where Bugs Bunny snacked on clams after tunneling in by way of cartoon Baghdad. Bugs didn't do Cayucos.

What it offers: Lots of candy stores have nut-caramel turtles and butter creams, but if you're looking for that candy necklace that made your neck sticky when you were 7, Snacks by the lb. is for you. The Feasterville store offers new-school and old-school candy. There are the gourmet chocolate-covered pretzels with toppings such as Oreo-cookie crumbles, but there are also Mallo Cups, Necco Wafers, and the wax bottles with the juice inside. The candy shop stocks sweets that cost between 10 cents and $24, the price tag for a pound of chocolate truffles. There is creamy homemade fudge made by co-owner Tracey Laiken that is decadently rich, and a wide variety of nuts, plain and roasted. There's more: Snacks by the lb.'s inventory goes beyond the sweet. There are greeting cards, gifts, candles, balloons, and jewelry made by Laiken, who studied glassblowing in Italy.

Spaghetti sauce suppers
A few months ago, our fun-and food-loving Register copy editor agreed to test recipes from David Joachim's cookbook ("A Man, A Can, and a Tailgate Plan"). So when I saw the author's latest book, I hoped to hit pay dirt again. Joachim's "The Spaghetti Sauce Gourmet" (Fair Winds Press, $19.95) has more than 160 easy recipes that use bottled pasta sauce, such as pesto, Alfredo and clam sauce, as well as good old marinara. And although Wright has a refined palate, he considers himself somewhat of a novice when it comes to cooking. He's just the kind of cook the author has in mind for his spaghetti-sauce-based cookery. But initially, it wasn't the recipes that reeled him in. It was the book's eye-catching cover. Set into the hard-back surface is a depiction of a large jar of marinara.
