Parrain launched into flying lessons, hoisting the big kite high in the air and helping her wind the string, while I spread the blanket in the grass, opened the basket and assembled our simple lunch: pasta salad, coleslaw, grapes, a half-bottle of cheap red wine, a Thermos of iced tea, a few sugar cookies. What is it about outdoor dining that can make even cold snack food served from white paper cartons seem so gourmet? Humans love to eat alfresco.

WEST BEND - Marshmallow Peeps: The Easter-time staples name itself may send shivers down the backbones of sensitive, blurry eyed parents this time of year, many recalling the sleepless nights and hyper behavior of youngsters gorging on what is - in essence - a mass of undiluted sugar. But area businesses may see dollar signs in the puffy, creature-shaped marshmallows. "Its kind of a holiday thing," said Chris Jung, owner of the Candy Tree in Kewaskum. "I think everybody associates it with Easter." With consumers this year planning to spend an average of $135.07 on Easter-related purchases, according the National Retail Federation - $18.53 alone on candy - Jung said many consumers are flocking to high-end chocolates and specialty candies during the Easter season.

Karen White, owner of Julie's Place restaurant and Karen's Catering, both on James Street at the Regency Tower, has the banquet facilities she has always dreamed about. And members of Lake Shore Yacht and Country Club, on Oneida Lake, get to enjoy gourmet, restaurant-quality food. White and her team have taken over the food and beverage operation at the country club, which is on Lakeshore Road in Cicero. When the weather warms, members will be able to come in off the links for "great burgers and sandwiches," White says. Or, she says, they're invited to make a dinner reservation and sit down to some of Julie's signature dishes, such as Caesar salad, pasta pie, Caribbean shrimp, steaks, seafood, chops and other upscale American fare. For weddings and other private parties, the club gives Karen's Catering plenty of room and options, including seating for about 200 in each of two rooms, a smaller room that seats about 60 and a big deck overlooking the lake.

They say your culinary tastes get more sophisticated as you get older, and now that I'm looking at my late twenties, I've found this to be true. Since graduating from college, I've traveled the world--or at least my tastebuds have. And I can now officially say that I've eaten my first falafel.
Mediza's sampler is perfect to try a little of this and a little of that. It's a platter of tahini, hummus, baba ghanouj and crispy falafel patties, served up with warm, pillowy pita bread. Any cuisine that highlights carbohydrates and dips is all right in my book.
I started off by making a mini-sandwich of falafel and the three spreads on a pita, but that didn't give me a chance to immediately savor each flavor on its own. The falafel was satisfyingly crunchy, though, and the three sauces lent a great creamy texture to my little creation.

Phoenix-Packers steak fry date set
The seventh annual Phoenix-Packers Steak Fry, a benefit for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball program, will be April 24 at Lambeau Field. UWGB coaches and players will attend the event along with Green Bay Packers players and staff members. A live auction will offer packages including a UWGB basketball road trip for the 2007-08 season, a gourmet dinner at coach Tod Kowalczyk's home, a Door County weekend getaway, a Packers game package, Packers memorabilia and a video iPod. The event begins with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by an all-you-can-eat steak dinner at 6 p.m. and a program at 7 p.m., all in the club level at the stadium. The steak fry has raised more than $230,000 for UWGB athletics, including $53,000 last year.
