Even on the Peninsula, where dining out is a pastime second only to collecting BMWs, a restaurant's life span is short, with new eateries sprouting like spring daffodils. This week's changes take place at The Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel, and include the sale of Bahama Billy's Island Steakhouse. Yes, weeks after restaurateur Bill Lee sold off Bixby's Southwest Grill next door, he signed over the Caribbean-slanted eatery to new owners, Anthony and April Momo from Denver. Another ribbon-cutting took place an olive's throw away as Big Dog Sports Restaurant opened its doors at the space formerly occupied by Sherlock Holmes Pub. The Momos previously owned and operated Cucina Colore, a contemporary Italian restaurant they opened in 1995.

Spring is finally arriving: Why not celebrate the sun in a caf apropos to the season? Dore's Caf and Market, with fresh food and sprightly dcor, is an ideal lunchtime locale. Walls awash with lavender, yellow daisies on each table and a comfy lounge area, Dore's has an inviting, airy atmosphere. The restaurant is the perfect place to catch up with friends or curl up with a book. For three years, Dore's has brought Lewiston a wide selection of breakfast and lunch options. From egg dishes and Panini's to pastries and lattes, the menu is extensive. Portions are reasonably sized but the same can't be said for the prices. While the food may be a delicious break from the typically greasy Lewiston fare, the prices make lunch at Commons more desirable. Sandwich options include anything from chicken salad to a portabella mushroom Panini.

Hard to believe it now, but once upon a time people actually dressed up for air travel. Today, as you know, anything goes. John Mariani, a world-famous food and wine journalist, reminds us in his newsletter The Virtual Gourmet, dressing up for the flight and during your trip has its advantages. One of Mariani’s more thought provoking suggestions in the course of his article is to consider how you look to the concierges, front desk clerks, fine dining restaurant hosts, and others you will encounter in the course of your travel. In one section he writes that showing up at the counter in a jacket and, preferably, a tie can work wonders with the gate and flight attendants in getting you a bit of preferential treatment. While I agree that looking good can help you score little favors, free upgrades seems a rather tall order these days.

Martha Stewart Provides Gourmet Meal To Space Tourist
Lifestyle queen Martha Stewart flew to Kazakhstan over the weekend to watch her reported boyfriend, software magnate Charles Simonyi, become the world's fifth space tourist. Simonyi paid a reported $25 million to take a 13-day journey to the International Space Station (ISS) with two Russian cosmonauts. Stewart, who is rumored to be dating the billionaire Microsoft developer, explored the Kazakh town of Baikonur before providing her man with a tasty meal to take aboard the Soyuz rocket.
