Renovation, decoration and building at the HIA Sydney Home Show

The HIA Sydney Home Show returns to Sydney from May 10 – 13 to deliver an event that will leave visitors brimming with ideas and handy hints from the industry design, building and renovation experts.

HIA Sydney Home Show is to take place at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In addition to a compelling mix of features, experts and advice, the HIA Sydney Home Show displays new products and services for the home from more than 300 exhibitors. From big name brands to boutique labels, the show aisles hold an array of must-haves, from big-ticket items to smaller pieces that add that special finishing touch for the home.

Navigating the show is easier than ever, with clearly labelled aisles and easy to identify staff dotted throughout the venue.

New bilingual magazine seeks to build bridges

College Hill, a new Chinese-American bilingual campus magazine run by the Brown China Forum, will come out with its first print issue by May, said Weiye Li MA'04 GS, the magazine's associate editor. The magazine's online version, which will be similar but not identical to the print version, will be available next week, said Editor in Chief Nathan Mao GS.

The magazine aims to enhance communication between Chinese and American students as well as increase the diversity of voices on campus, said Mao, who is also president of BCF.

Members of BCF first conceived of the magazine last fall as a way to "establish a bridge between overseas Chinese students and domestic Chinese students," Li said.

College Hill, which has both undergraduate and graduate students as editors and contributors, features a variety of elements, including academic work, poetry, art, opinions, job information and a gourmet section, Mao said.

OUTDOORS REPORT/BY JB K ASPER

Capt. Steve Spinelli has been running the Big Mohawk III while Captain Chris Heuth is on holiday. Steve reports the boat has been into a mix of ling and tog, mostly during the early part of the week.

The Golden Eagle has also been bottom fishing, reports Capt. Greg Markett. The boat's most recent trip enjoyed a decent pick of ling, a few blackfish, congers and pollock. Weather permitting, the boat will be sailing daily for bottom fish until the macs show up. The last report shows the macs are 50-60 miles east to the south.

The Miss Belmar Princess got in a few bottom fishing trips seeing mostly ling and blackfish, along with some decent-sized cod in the teens. Capt. Bob Bogan of the Gambler said his boat fished a 40-mile wreck where anglers scored cod, pollock and jumbo ling with a 27-pound cod by John Chiavarini taking the pool.

Graze anatomy

Peter Harman - the self-proclaimed food guru - has two favorite foods. His No. 1 is popcorn, and his No. 2 is Past-a-Roni garlic and olive oil vermicelli. This middle-aged father of two unapologetically admits that his appetite coincides more with a college student's than a chef's, but the cookbook author, international chef-podcaster, and owner of Martini's Grille in Burlington finds pleasure in reconsidering the ordinary.

His newest venture, Graze, 115 E. College St., in the building that was once home to Venuto's World Bistro, serves up hearty portions of "really good junk food."

"I make food the way grandma used to cook," Harman said.

Nothing at Graze is low-fat or low-carbohydrate.

"People talk health and eat junk," he said.

Adventures In Vegetarianism

In her editor's letter in the April issue of Gourmet magazine, Ruth Reichl announces the arrival of a new feature devoted to hearty vegetarian recipes. With more and more restaurants offering a variety of vegetarian and even vegan dishes on their menus, in combination with the growing concern for environmentally-friendly living, the appeal of fresh, locally-grown, seasonal vegetables and legumes is suddenly extremely important in the food world. I recently decided I had better give in to the trend and veg out. Okay, it wasn't a conscious decision - I was on my second date with the boyishly charming Mr. I'minlikewithyou and he invited me to dinner at his favorite vegan place in San Francisco, Millennium. He promised me it was haute vegan cuisine with not even the slightest hint of hippie and an atmosphere that was chic, sophisticated, and elegant; boy was he right.
