Smoothie shop fills niche in Clinton

When Clay Mansell saw a vacant space in Clinton that once housed a smoothie shop, he knew just what to do.

Mansell and his wife, Amanda, opened Euphoria Smoothies at 103 U.S. 80 West in Clinton. It's in a shopping center behind the Cellular South location at U.S. 80 and Springridge Road.

"It's a perfect location near Mississippi College," he said. "Kroger is supposed to move into the center where Winn-Dixie once was. I expect that will double our sales overnight."

Mansell said he had expected a "young crowd" as customers for smoothies, a milkshakelike concoction of fruit and nonfat yogurt and - if you so choose - supplements such as whey protein, flax or bran. But "grandmother-age" customers have outpaced the college age, he said.

"Lots of people use smoothies as meal replacements and skip lunch," he said.

Weird News — Fights not worth the bother

Traditional Chinese celebrations have been mentioned several times in News of the Weird, including the annual Tombsweeping Festival in April, which calls on people to visit relatives' graves and leave offerings that will improve the afterlives of the deceased. Actual objects (such as jewelry and money) are no longer required, as paper representations are considered just as effective. This year, according to an Agence France-Presse dispatch, paper illustrations of dancing girls will adorn many graves, along with paper "Viagra" pills (and even more questionably, paper renditions of condoms).

Ask The Chef: Orsay's Jason Hicks

When I was executive chef at La Goulou we had live frogs in the kitchen and one escaped into the dining room. At least customers knew the frogs legs were fresh that day. Also, at a previous restaurant where I worked, a waiter took an order from a regular grande dame client, but when he left the table to type in the order, he heard commotion coming from the table. When he returned to see if everything was ok, he was mortified to discover that the lady's wig had attached itself to his apron and he'd been walking round with it.

What is the most common misconception about eating out? By having the chef's name on the menu, customers assume that he/she is in the kitchen day in day out. It isn't necessarily the case with some of the bigger names, however they still have to maintain a rigorous quality.
