Recognizing strong, balanced growth
It is with great pleasure that I present the second annual edition of Ottawa's Fastest Growing Companies. It is our intention with this program to seek out and recognize privately held companies that can demonstrate strong growth while remaining cash-flow positive. After consulting with local accountants, we established somewhat stringent criteria to ensure companies that have made the cut represent the best of what Ottawa has to offer. To qualify, companies must be headquartered in the National Capital Region or adjacent municipalities and have completed three fiscal years with financials that had been verified by a third-party accountant with either a review engagement or audit. Provided these criteria were met, we were open to any private company in any industry.
Green salad has tasty dressing
I love fresh, green salads especially in the spring and summer months and lately have been experimenting with new combinations of ingredients and new dressings or vinaigrettes. I enjoy reading recipes and looking at magazine photos and imagining the taste of that plump red tomato or the leafy green lettuce leaf covered with a shiny dressing. Yum. I've even been thinking ahead to summer salads while planning my container garden. I'm impatiently waiting for a package of grape tomato seeds and a package of Early Girl tomatoes to germinate so I can transfer them to an outdoor pot. I'm also waiting for the weather to warm so I can move six gourmet lettuce plants to an outdoor planter. It will be nice to move my emerging garden from our dining table! And if I can figure out the best variety to buy, I'll also be planting some red bell peppers, and maybe some green ones as well.
New cookbooks promising speedy meals
When it comes to getting dinner on the table, speed isn't enough. Americans have come to demand gourmet style and flavors from cookbooks that promise fast and easy meals. How does the latest crop hold up? "Hands-off Cooking," by Ann Martin Rolke (Wiley, 2007, $17.95) The gist here is that the best fast meals are those that need not be tended to. And so while Rolke's recipes aren't fast by the Rachael Ray 30-minute-standard (the caramelized-onion brisket takes almost seven hours), they are designed to require little hands-on time. Which is why rather than total start-to-finish times, Rolke offers what she calls hands-off time with each recipe. This does leave prep time a mystery, but she believes it's better to know how long you won't spend at the stove while the recipe cooks.
Clarkson Students Partner with Scoopuccinos, St. Lawrence ...
Freshmen enrolled in Clarkson University's School of Business class in entrepreneurship have learned and applied the concept of "innovative adaptation" in the launch of their new business, Piece of Cake. Three months after their grand opening in Clarkson's Cheel Arena complex, Piece of Cake broke even from the sale of gourmet desserts, specialty coffees, teas and drinks, as well as other delectable sweets. The business is open during the evening hours and saw significant business during hockey games. The company has also developed an on-campus delivery service and delivers gift baskets on campus. Innovative product line; not necessarily, but the fact these students have partnered with local Potsdam businesses, including Scoopuccinos and the new St. Lawrence Chocolates, is a unique approach to the course requirement to launch a student-run business during their first year at Clarkson.
