The Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, northwest of Lubbock, looks like a French landscape painting. The rolling hills covered in a sea of long-stemmed prairie grass seem to move in waves, pushed by the relentless wind under an endless sky. The simplicity of the color palette of this small square of the giant quilt of the state's ecosystems gives the park an uncommon beauty. "We have a guy from England who visits us every year in the summer on his vacation," says Harold Beierman, manager of the federal preserve. "I guess he comes for the view and the experience." Muleshoe NWR was the first of 15 wildlife refuges in Texas maintained by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the refuge by executive order in 1935. The 5,809 acres were once part of the XIT Ranch and later the Muleshoe ranches.
Exciting Exhibitions, Thrilling Competition and Boutique Shopping ...
Celebrating its 111th year, the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is adding an eleventh day, Sunday, June 3, which will be devoted to local classes. Devon, which runs May 24 through June 3, benefits Bryn Mawr Hospital, to which it has donated over $12 million since 1919. One major change in the schedule follows the breeding classes that take over the Dixon Oval during the day on Thursday, June 1. On the evening schedule, classes will begin at 5 p.m., with saddlebred and coaching competitions, and the piece de resistance, the $75,000 Grand Prix of Devon will be held as the final class of the evening session, beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m. Jumper classes are held daily throughout the 10 days, culminating in two grand prix classes, held Thursday and Saturday evenings, but there is also a potpourri of equestrian disciplines, from hunters to elegant side saddle competitions, high stepping gaited horses and carriages of all types, plus exciting exhibitions.
Macy's plans gourmet-style fast food in eight Florida stores
Macy's plans to introduce its own brand of quick-serve eateries and restaurants by world-famous chefs Wolfgang Puck and Todd English to Florida stores as a part of a national expansion project. The department store chain expects to bring Macy's Taste Bars -- featuring a menu of signature soups, salads, sandwiches, as well as Macy's brand gelato and coffee -- to as many as eight stores across the state, including a location at the Town Center mall in Boca Raton, Macy's Florida spokeswoman Melissa Goff said Tuesday. In addition, Macy's will open a Wolfgang Puck Express at a Broward County store and a café by Todd English called Fig's at a Palm Beach County store, Goff said. She declined to say which mall stores would attract the new restaurants but said plans call for them to open this year.
Gourmet chocolates melt barriers to entrepreneurship
BLANDING, Utah - The feeling put into the creation of something can make it very special. That is what makes the gourmet chocolate of the Lickity Split Chocolate Studio, LLC, a start-up managed by 35 Navajo and Ute children between the ages of 9 and 14, unique. And besides that, the chocolate tastes great. The AmeriCorp Volunteers in Service to American at the San Juan Foundation in Blanding donated their office space to the company, as initial support, but other than a grant from the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Council, the effort has been all bootstrap. Lickity Split began about three years ago when a group of children approached Elaine Bland, a VISTA member, looking for a way to make money to go to the local movie house. Bland suggested they start a business so they could go to the movies whenever they wanted, and afford things such as bicycles, computers and phones.

This is according to Eric Lim, vice president of Conlins Coffee Co. during an intimate press luncheon at the SM Mall of Asia. Coffee Helps Fight the War in Afghanistan
"We are not trying to open up a forum to discuss our beliefs on the War; as we have stated more than once;" stated Joe Wells; co-founder and coffee roaster at Island Joes Gourmet Coffee Roasting Company located in old town Key West, Florida. "We just feel we should do something; as everyone should; no matter how small or large; to let the men and women keeping America a safe place to sleep at night; know we are thinking of them. We get up in the morning; have cup of coffee; take the kids to school and are able to enjoy many other things in our everyday life. Why? Because we have men and women overseas making sure we can enjoy these everyday simple pleasures in life. So we decided to do more than just talk about it. As a matter of fact; we would not even be making our helping hand public; but we felt by going public we could offer others the opportunity to offer a helping hand." Let start by reviewing the one of the first emails Island Joes Coffee received from Trooper.
