ATSC supporters celebrate 25th years
The Sophisticates, the major support group for the Assessment and Treatment Services Center, chose a "Haute, Haute, Haute/Where the Element of Art Meets Fashion" theme to celebrate its 25th anniversary March 19 at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort. With Ferrari and Maserati of Newport Beach supplying luxury cars at the entrance, upscale store offerings via drawings and live auction and a first-class St. John spring fashion runway show, the 430 guests luxuriated in the moment. Sophisticates president Sarah Corrigan and event chairwoman Lisa Hallaian welcomed everyone, introducing Christopher Tate, St. John vice president of retail, Western region, and celebrity stylist and emcee Mark-Alan Harmon, who proclaimed long shorts to the knee, a J. Crew T-shirt, a blazer and cork platform heels a fun spring fashion trend.
He cooks up his own way to honor grandfather
Nearly 10 years ago to the day - April 15, 1997 - Jesse Robinson Simms, then 18, was on the field at Shea Stadium, shoulder-to-shoulder with a cadre of luminaries that included President Clinton, taking part in a 50th anniversary celebration of the day his grandfather, Jackie Robinson, broke through major-league baseball's color barrier. At the time, Simms seemed on a path to be the first in the family to carry on his grandfather's athletic legacy. A 6-foot-3, 270-pound prep school football star from North Stamford, Conn., Simms had signed a letter of intent with UCLA, where Jackie had excelled in baseball, football and track and had met his wife, Rachel, Jesse's grandmother. The emotional attachment to UCLA was strong. Jesse never knew his grandfather, who died seven years before he was born, but he became well aware of his deeds through his mother, Sharon, Jackie's daughter, and his now-84-year-old grandmother, who helped raise him and still visits almost every weekend.
Business Briefs
Genesco yesterday rejected Foot Locker's $1.2 billion takeover offer, but Foot Locker isn't ruling out the possibility of raising its bid for its footwear and accessories rival. Foot Locker had proposed paying $46 a share for Genesco in a deal that would have united its Foot Locker, Footaction, Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports and Footquarters chains with Genesco's Journeys, Lids, Hat World and Underground Station brands. After consulting with financial adviser Goldman Sachs and legal adviser Bass, Berry & Sims, Nash ville, Tenn.-based Genesco said in a letter to Foot Locker that the offer undervalued the company and that previous discussions about a buyout had mentioned prices between $48 and $50 per share. A Foot Locker spokesman wouldn't comment on Genesco's decision.
