Le Cook Store offers culinary tools, demonstration

Are you a culinary genius but lack the appropriate kitchen appliances to prepare the banquet of which you've always dreamed?

Le Cook Store, located at 911 Third Ave., across from Pullman Square, has all the tools and cookware any amateur gourmet chef could ever want.

Apart from its wide selection of gastronomic gadgets, Le Cook Store also offers cooking demonstrations in its built-in kitchen.

The store is in its fourth month of operation, and Shawn Bresnahan, manager and operating partner of the store, said they have had good business.

"We've done very well," Bresnahan said. "We've actually had a lot of people through the doors."

The store is located next to the Marshall Community and Technical College Culinary & Cooking Institute, and although the two establishments occasionally work together for mutual gain, they are not a single entity.

Grab some picnic fixings

Blooms are bursting out all over. It's prime time for Table Rock hiking. And the announcement of the Britt Festivals line-up always sets me dreaming about music and meals on the hillside.

But ... this being spring in the Rogue Valley, the weather can be a little unpredictable, to say the least. Anyone who wants to get in some outdoor eating had better move fast when the sun breaks through.

Fortunately, the area has some great places to pick up quick and tasty sandwiches and salads that are perfect for outings.

Allyson's Kitchen, known as Allyson's of Ashland until the popular kitchen store extended its reach online and with plans for a branch in Bend, has a top-notch deli. Tucked in the basement at 115 E. Main St., Ashland, Allyson's deli makes sandwiches with specialty meats and cheeses and tops them off with Shakespeare-inspired names.

Annual Arts Council fundraiser is now more important than ever

STANDISH - Rural arts directors have learned a thing or two about survival in Michigan's ever-shrinking arts funding climate.

On April 22, the Northeast Michigan Arts Council holds its biggest fundraiser - an annual auction - at noon in Standish. The council secures grant funding for arts and cultural projects across Bay, Arenac, Midland and Saginaw counties.

''It's our 22nd auction, so we're pretty good at begging, borrowing and stealing to make it a nice event,'' says Gail Schmidt, arts council director. ''Businesses in the region are very generous. This year, we've got more than 200 items to bid on.''

Items such as a ''Dessert of the Month,'' one gourmet recipe for every month of the year, are among the event's donations. Look, too, for new bicycles for children, a digital camera, antiques, glassware and bed & breakfast overnights, Schmidt said.

New downtown shop offers gourmet greatness

For fans of high-end food and gifts, Mawby's has a lot to offer. Just ask owner Chris Perry. "It's so difficult to describe, short of a book, what's in here," said Perry from within his downtown "Gourmet Luxury Lifestyle" shop on Barnard Street, which opened March 19. "People would ask me, 'What's Mawby's going to be?' I used to dread the question. There are so many unusual products. There's so much going on in the store, it's difficult to distill it into a short answer."For starters, Mawby's boasts gourmet food that customers can order for carry-out eating. A duck breast sandwich and buffalo meat burger highlight the unique menu offerings. "We're a restaurant with no seating," said Perry. "We're selling people gourmet food that they can take home with them."Then there's the imported cheeses, chocolates and desserts, and hard-to-find gift items | like antique Victorian-era flasks made of sterling silver and crocodile-skin from London, leather luggage and folding chairs from Africa and hand-made purses and cutlery.

Lyla's, a new gourmet kitchen and cafe, opens in Chappaqua

CHAPPAQUA - "SoHo in Chappaqua" is how Omar Kaghat likes to describe his new eatery in town.

Lyla's, a hip gourmet kitchen and cafe on King Street that opened this month, is Kaghat's second venture in the hamlet. He and his brother-in-law, Joe Quartararo, opened Le Jardin Du Roi, a popular French restaurant also on King Street, seven years ago.

On a recent afternoon, pedestrians on the sidewalk gaped through Lyla's bay windows lined with a crepe bar and pots of soup.

Inside, counters offering wraps and sandwiches, pastries and chocolates, and a fresh salad bar contributed to the lunchtime din.

Lyla's, named for Kaghat's 7-year-old daughter, fills the spot vacated by Jessie's Closet, a clothing boutique that went out of business.

"I'd rather have crepes than tie-dye T-shirts," said Lisa Mariano, 36, of Chappaqua, as she dug into her Nutella and banana crepe.
