Chefs' special: cookbooks

If you don't think chefs get emotional about their cookbooks, then you haven't talked to Matt Dillon about his eclectic collection.

Stop by Sitka & Spruce, where he keeps his cookbooks on display in the restaurant's minuscule dining room, and you'll find titles from near ("The Herbfarm Cookbook" by the Northwest's own Jerry Traunfeld) and far ("Crazy Water Pickled Lemons," by British food writer Diana Henry). As well as an entire section devoted to the woman he calls "the most influential cook the country's had" — Alice Waters — and her restaurant, Chez Panisse.

At Greenwood's Da Vinci Bakery & CafĂ©, regulars come in for gluten-free pastries and panini, knowing they can also devour baker Kaili McIntyre's beloved cookbooks — a veritable lending library for her customers.

Round 3 play begins with high-scoring matches

The teams then posted 16 points each in the 'Double the Fun' segment and this meant that Holy Childhood Prep remained slightly ahead on 24 points, with Morris Knibb on 22. The 'Captain's Quest' corrected that situation when the Morris Knibb captain added 3 points to the team's score, compared to 1 point added by the Holy Childhood captain. and both teams entered the final 'Let's Buzz' segment locked on 25 points. This seemed to give Morris Knibb the incentive needed to push for victory and the team logged an impressive 18 points in the segment, compared to six points posted by Holy Childhood. The match ended with Holy Childhood on a commendable 31 points, but with Morris Knibb on an imposing 43 points. Morris Knibb therefore became the first team into the Quarter Finals for 2007.

Come On, Have a Taste!

There is only one day left to send your palate off to paradise, and Saturday is the ticket as the Taste of Vail continues with cooking, wine seminars and the Grand Tasting and Dance.

The Taste hit turbo drive on Friday with the Mountaintop picnic, in which dozens of the valley’s most exquisite restaurants offered exotic and delicious dishes and wineries handed out samples of their most coveted reserves.

The desserts topped the treat totem for us. Vail Gourmet Cookie CO. had plenty of people loitering around its baskets of mint chocolate shortbreads and caramel-injected brownies while Chap’s dished out mini limoncello custard cakes with blueberry compote. You’re drooling, aren’t you?The savory offerings ranged from fish tacos to Colby meatballs to brie soup with truffles. If any of this sounds appealing, here’s what’s left to taste on Saturday, April 14.9:30 to 11 a.m.: The Food Network’s Michael Chiarello demonstrates the art of Southern Italian Cuisine at the Lionshead Marriott12 to 1:30 p.m.: Spanish Wine Seminar discussion and tasting of Spain’s comeback into the world of indulgent grape beverages at the Lionshead Marriott.2:30 to 4 p.m.: Grape nuts will have a ball with this rare chance to taste eight vintages from Domaine Louis Latour at the Vertical Tasting; Lionshead Marriott.7 p.m.

Never mess with a professional

I MAY as well have had the words "gullible tourist" tattooed on my forehead as I strolled along the white-sand beach of Seminyak. Other beachgoers were dressed to show off their tans in board shorts and bikinis. Embarking for Bali at short notice, I was overly pale, underprepared and overdressed, sweating in the humidity. As I strolled along the beach, the hawkers made their approach.

I have never been a fan of the haggle, but I knew it was all part of the Bali experience, and I had a tactic. I'll be harsh but fair, I told myself, and silly as I may look, those hagglers will soon get the message this pasty Aussie is not to be messed with.

I dismissed each and every approach. It seemed too easy. Was there no worthy opponent? Then Tony the budding artist popped up.

Cadbury to face court over salmonella in chocolate

Confectionery giant Cadbury is to be prosecuted for producing and selling "unsafe" chocolate contaminated with salmonella and unfit for human consumption last year, it was confirmed yesterday.

Birmingham city council is prosecuting the company for a breach of health and safety legislation at the plant in Marlbrook, Herefordshire, in what could be one of the largest and most complex cases ever brought in the UK.

The Guardian revealed in February that health officials were poised to launch the prosecution. The Birmingham-based manufacturer is facing charges in relation to three alleged offences, each carrying a maximum penalty of an unlimited fine and/or two years imprisonment, the council said in a statement.

World Class Wedding Expo Expected to Attract Thousands

WAIKIKI (KHNL) - Thousands of brides will be flocking to the Hawaii Convention Center this weekend for the season's biggest bridal expo. This is the 18th year for the Hawaii World Class Wedding Expo.

An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 brides-to-be can browse the aisles to check out booths from 150 different vendors offering dozens of services to check out - from florists to bakers to bridal fitness. It is the only locally produced wedding expo in the state, according to organizer Dun Uchimura.

We caught up with Florist Grand owner Evan Morita, who exhibits at the expo year after year. "It's a good opportunity for brides to come and select vendors. There are other florists here as well. They can educate themselves on different options out there."

For the first time, Hokulani Bake Shop decided to get a booth.
