A Little Blues at Maas Coffee Roasters in North Florida
Fort Walton Beach, April 18, 2007 -- Jim Mass' passion for beans began 20 years ago when he learned the coffee roasting business inside and out. And now, he has his own business which includes the Maas Cafe, as well as an offsite roaster. He also plans to sell his fresh-roasted, gourmet coffee (made from beans from all over the world) on the Internet soon. For a list of all of the varieties that Jim has been very carefully roasting to perfection, visit his website. And now, as the weather is warming...every Friday night at 7:00 p.m., the infamous Joe Fingers will be banging out some hot blues on the back patio of the Maas Cafe - which overlooks the Sound in downtown Fort Walton Beach. (Okaloosa Island is just over Brooks Bridge, not far from Jim's new place.) So, grab some java (there are many options), and a chair.
Police investigate sandwich shop robbery
Lawrence police are investigating a report of a robbery early Friday at Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop, 1447 W. 23rd St. A 23-year-old store employee told police he was locking the front door of the business about 4:20 a.m. when two suspects approached from the west and kept walking toward him as he backed away. The employee said one of the suspects grabbed the business deposit bag from him, and both suspects fled west on foot. The suspects are described as weighing between 140 and 170 pounds and standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall. They were last seen wearing black ski masks and black hooded sweatshirts. .
Egged On With Style
Easter is certainly about eggs, but don't put all your eggs in the Easter basket. Put them on the dinner table, too. Eggs are one of the more fascinating foods. They can be cooked in so many ways and used for so many different purposes, from helping a cake rise to creating a smooth emulsion in mayonnaise or Hollandaise. The reputation of the egg went through a rough patch a few years ago when scientists associated it with an increased risk of heart disease. That's changed, though, and even the American Heart Association approves of moderate consumption of an egg a day in a diet that contains an average daily cholesterol consumption of 300 mg or less. Eggs are loaded with nutrition: protein, and vitamins A, B2 and D. Eggs are not fat-free, but of the 5 grams in one egg, only 1.5 grams are saturated, an unhealthy fat.
