| Come On, Have a Taste!
There is only one day left to send your palate off to paradise, and Saturday is the ticket as the Taste of Vail continues with cooking, wine seminars and the Grand Tasting and Dance. The Taste hit turbo drive on Friday with the Mountaintop picnic, in which dozens of the valley’s most exquisite restaurants offered exotic and delicious dishes and wineries handed out samples of their most coveted reserves. The desserts topped the treat totem for us. Vail Gourmet Cookie CO. had plenty of people loitering around its baskets of mint chocolate shortbreads and caramel-injected brownies while Chap’s dished out mini limoncello custard cakes with blueberry compote. You’re drooling, aren’t you?The savory offerings ranged from fish tacos to Colby meatballs to brie soup with truffles. If any of this sounds appealing, here’s what’s left to taste on Saturday, April 14.9:30 to 11 a.m.: The Food Network’s Michael Chiarello demonstrates the art of Southern Italian Cuisine at the Lionshead Marriott12 to 1:30 p.m.: Spanish Wine Seminar discussion and tasting of Spain’s comeback into the world of indulgent grape beverages at the Lionshead Marriott.2:30 to 4 p.m.: Grape nuts will have a ball with this rare chance to taste eight vintages from Domaine Louis Latour at the Vertical Tasting; Lionshead Marriott.7 p.m.

In the land of sequels, creativity still stands out
Spider-Man skipped this year's ShoWest convention, at which movie studios typically try to woo theater owners with celebrities, sneak previews and splashy events. Harry Potter never materialized. Shrek apparently had better things to do, too. After all, when you're a movie hero with a surefire sequel on the way, why bother making friends with those who already love you? Theater owners know that Spider-Man 3 May 4, Shrek the Third (May 18) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July 13) are blockbusters they'll want on their screens. The only question is how much popcorn to stock for the summertime sequel glut. Except for New Line Cinema's dynamic coming-out party for Hairspray and a couple of closing-night banquet appearances, ShoWest 2007 was as predictable as this summer's slate of movies.
24 hours in the Nitzana dunes
Even long-time Negev residents can't remember such a tremendous profusion of spring blossoms like the ones they've been witnessing during the past few weeks in the dunes of Shivta and Nitzana. Stretching out on either side of the empty road that leads across the border to Egypt are purple carpets of stock (mantur), yellow carpets of Negev groundsels and soft, undulating expanses of verdant vegetation. But the main attraction in this excursion is desert agriculture. The green agricultural areas and large hothouses are not something you necessarily expect to see in a region that receives an average of just 50-100 millimeters of rainfall per year. In the early centuries C.E., the descendants of the Nabateans grew olives and grapes here by using the rainwater and floodwaters that collected on the loess soil, via a complex system of terraces, small dams and drainage ditches.
To Peep or Not to Peep
There are a number of stories and legends that exist around Easter. My personal favorite is the legend that has grown up around the humble Easter egg. On the Sunday morning following the Crucifixion of Christ, Mary Magdalene took a basket of hard-boiled eggs along with her as she went to Christ’s tomb. Roman soldiers were guarding the tomb, the authorities having been alerted to a possible theft of Christ’s body. Roman soldiers were no different than any other soldier at any other time in history. Judea was a detested posting. Their pay did not allow for gourmet items like hard-boiled eggs and there was no Fed Ex to ship care packages from their families back in Rome. Mary was going to use the eggs as an incentive (bribe) to allow entry into the tomb.
